HISTORY OF OUR CORPS

The History of Army Cadets in Medicine Hat dates back to June 4, 1908 with the formation of the 186 Medicine Hat Mounted Cadets. This first incarnation of 18 cadets formed under the guidance of the principal of Alexandra High School, where they made there home site.

The name and number of the corps has changed many times over the years, usually coinciding with a change in the regimental family name, or a change of support base from one CF base to another. Interest and enrollment in the various incarnations of the cadet corps has fluctuated to more or less coincide with major occurrences happening around us in the world. It is interesting to note that many of our soldiers and reservists who voluntarily enlisted, were ex-army cadets.

Our current incarnation can be most closely linked to a name change of the regimental family on May 26 1948 to 2313 Medicine Hat Army (S Alta R) Cadet Corps. Although the name has changed a few more times, our core number has remained in effect.

In 1969 it was decided to amalgamate two corps which were under the sponsorship of the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment the 2313 Medicine Hat Cadet Corps and the 156 Redcliff Cadet Corps under the new name 2313 Medicine Hat - Redcliff Cadet Corps and they would parade out of the Patterson Armoury in Medicine Hat.

In 1975 the name was changed to 2313 South Alberta Light Horse Cadet Corps. It was also at this time that government bill C16 came into effect to officially allow females to enroll as cadets. Prior to this year females who did parade (some as early as 1970) were known as "KADETS" pronounced kaydets.

In Nov. 1994 the 2313 SALH RCACC now under the support of CFB Edmonton and the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment came under the command of Major Miles Johnson our current Officer Commanding.

In 1997 the Medicine Hat (downtown) Kiwanis entered into a CO-sponsorship with the South Alberta Light Horse regiment and the name changed to its current 2313 SALH RCACC (Kiwanis). The corps has also maintained a supportive relationship with local branches of the Royal Canadian Legion over the years.
